Call for Business development consultant - Food System Challenge

Context & Background

Berytech is a leading organization in the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Lebanon, that aims to provide a conducive environment for the creation and development of startups, through incubation, business support, counseling, funding, networking, and company hosting, hence taking part in the economic revival of the country, participating in wealth and job creation, and retaining graduates and high-level skills in Lebanon.

About FSC PROJECT

The Food System Challenge supports businesses to solve core challenges of the food system in Lebanon, and more specifically in the sectors of dairy and meat production (cow, goat, sheep), cereals and pulses (and its by-products), protected horticulture (Classical green houses, hydroponics, and aquaponics), and domesticated edible herbs and plants.

The Food System Challenge is implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) and Berytech through support from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Throughout FSC’s previous and current cycles, the program supported over 40 SMEs to fortify the Lebanese food system to create a more sustainable ecosystem.

Beneficiary background

Jawalco is a distribution company operating in the Bekaa region, specializing in the warehousing, distribution, and sales of FMCG products, including brands like Aruba and Ghandour. As part of its growth strategy, Jawalco seeks to expand its portfolio by acquiring new suppliers whose products it can distribute, including private label opportunities. This initiative aims to enhance Jawalco's product offerings, strengthen supplier relationships, and position the company as a leading distributor in the region..

Objective

The primary objectives of this consultancy are to:

  1. Identify and engage with new suppliers to secure distribution agreements and expand Jawalco’s product range.
  2. Explore opportunities for private label partnerships to increase revenue streams.
  3. Develop a strategic business development plan to grow sales and strengthen Jawalco's market presence.

Scope of work:

The consultant will be required to deliver the following services:

Phase 1: Market Research and Supplier Identification

  • Conduct market research to identify potential FMCG suppliers/producers.
  • Analyze trends in the FMCG sector and identify opportunities for private-label partnerships.
  • Compile a targeted list of suppliers with aligned business goals and product categories.
  • Conduct competitive analysis covering product features, net weights, packaging, pricing, etc.

Phase 2: Supplier Engagement and Negotiation Support

  • Develop tailored value propositions for Jawalco to present to potential suppliers/ clients.
  • Support Jawalco in initiating contact, negotiations, and onboarding of new suppliers/clients.
  • Provide advisory support to formalize supplier agreements, including terms for distribution and private label offerings.

Phase 3: Business Development Strategy

  • Develop and implement a business development strategy to expand Jawalco’s market share through new supplier/client acquisitions.
  • Define actionable steps for growing sales, targeting new markets, and building supplier relationships.
  • Recommend tools and processes for monitoring supplier performance and managing relationships.
  • Identify new business opportunities, including potential partnerships and distribution agreements.
  • Develop strategies for customer acquisition and retention.
  • Create a sales plan with targets, timelines, and resource allocation.

Phase 4: Training and Knowledge Transfer

  • Train Jawalco's team on implementing the business development strategy and engaging with suppliers.
  • Provide templates, negotiation techniques, and tools for supplier acquisition.

Duration

The consultancy is expected to span 3 months, with specific on-site days to be agreed upon based on project milestones and progress.

  • Market Research Report with a list of potential suppliers and private label opportunities.
  • Supplier Engagement Framework, including value propositions and negotiation support tools.
  • Business Development Strategy Document with clear steps for growth.
  • Training Materials and sessions to equip Jawalco's team for supplier acquisition and relationship management.
  • Final Report summarizing progress, outcomes, and recommendations for continued implementation.

Qualifications:

The selected consultant should have:

  • Market Research Report with a list of potential suppliers and private label opportunities.
  • Supplier Engagement Framework, including value propositions and negotiation support tools.
  • Business Development Strategy Document with clear steps for growth.
  • Training Materials and sessions to equip Jawalco's team for supplier acquisition and relationship management.
  • Final Report summarizing progress, outcomes, and recommendations for continued implementation.

How to apply

The selected Consultant is expected to start his/her activities soon after selection; the exact timeline and effective working days are to be set based on both company’s and the Consultant’s availabilities. The total budget allocated for the intervention is between $3,000 and $4,000.

Candidates should submit the following documents.

  • Technical (maximum two pages) describing the methodology to conduct the work based on the content suggested in the section: “Scope of Work, Duration, and Deliverables” elaborating it further.
  • Profile and project references (maximum two pages): A brief explanation of the consultant(s) background should be submitted (CVs shall be included as an annex) along with project references on the topic.
  • Financial Proposal describing the expected remuneration and the proposed timeframe of the intervention.

**The firm/consultant is required to perform a pre-assessment visit/call to the business before submitting the proposal to assess and quote accordingly**
