Helem is the first LGBTQIA+ rights organization in the Arab world, officially established in Beirut, Lebanon in 2001. Its mission is to lead the struggle for the liberation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Intersex, Transgendered, Queer (LGBTQIA+), and other people with non-conforming sexualities and/or gender identities in Lebanon and the SWANA region from all sorts of violations of their individual and collective civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Our goal is to empower young LGBTQIA+ leaders to advocate for their own liberation. We seek to create initiatives and spaces where our communities can leverage unity through diversity and build power. We protect and support individuals with the resources to resist the harm caused by homophobia and transphobia. We empower our youth through education and community building and mobilize to change the laws, policies, and practices that deny us equality and reduce our quality of life.
The case worker will be responsible for managing the needs of displaced LGBTQIA+ individuals, providing them with holistic support through assessment, planning, coordination, and follow-up. The case worker will serve as a bridge between displaced individuals and various service providers, ensuring that urgent needs are met and that beneficiaries have access to more sustainable resources in the long term.
Key Responsibilities:
Initial Assessment and Case Management:
- Conduct in-depth needs assessments with all displaced individuals seeking support from Helem.
- Collect detailed information regarding their current living conditions, displacement status, immediate needs (shelter, food, clothing, hygiene), and potential longer-term challenges.
- Develop personalized case plans, outlining immediate support required and sustainable goals (such as permanent housing or employment).
Service Coordination:
- Act as the main point of contact between sheltered individuals and service providers, including shelter facilities, food distribution centers, clothing providers, medical services, and legal aid organizations.
- Partake in the networking efforts with external partners, NGOs, and government entities to secure additional resources, support in advocating for LGBT-sensitive services, and facilitate access to assistance.
- Ensure beneficiaries receive the full range of services available, including transportation, meals, hygiene kits, and mental health support.
Logistical Support:
- Coordinate transportation logistics for individuals relocating to safer areas or accessing essential services.
- Arrange and track the distribution of emergency supplies such as food parcels, hygiene kits, and clothing.
- Assist beneficiaries in securing temporary shelter and monitor their stay to ensure safety and comfort.
Developing Sustainable Solutions:
- Support beneficiaries in identifying long-term housing solutions, employment opportunities, and access to basic social services.
- Help connect individuals with job training, educational resources, and financial assistance programs.
- Collaborate with local organizations to facilitate access to permanent housing and stable income sources for displaced individuals.
Follow-up and Reporting:
- Conduct regular follow-up sessions with beneficiaries to monitor their progress, reassess their needs, and adjust services as necessary.
- Maintain accurate and confidential case records, documenting all interactions, services provided, and progress towards sustainability.
- Produce regular reports to Helem’s management team and donors, outlining challenges faced, milestones achieved, and future recommendations for ongoing support.
