How to facilitate dialogue between two people in conflict

Do you experience friends or family members or colleagues arguing and quarrelling with each other? Or would you like to learn how to facilitate between two neighbours, students or other people having conflicts? Do you want to intervene when people have trouble communicating with each other, but you are not sure how to start?

In this 4-hour online session you can learn about preparing and facilitating a dialogue between two people, helping them to really listen to and understand each other and identifying actions they can take. You will learn how to prepare yourself so you can be equally supporting both sides, and to create a safe space for them to have a dialogue that is not about blame and defensiveness, but about really understanding the needs of both. You will have the opportunity to practice your new learned skills and to reflect on challenges you might have faced when you tried to facilitate or mediate before.

We will focus on facilitation between only two people, because it becomes much more complex in bigger groups. However, the principles are the same. So learning this approach and practicing it can then help you to build your skills to assist bigger groups later.

To make this session very useful, ideally think of a conflict beforehand, that you are/were involved in and which you want to explore when practicing in small groups.

The facilitator, Duke Duchscherer is a certified trainer on Nonviolent Communication (NVC) which (contrary to popular believe) is NOT about ‘being nice’ but much rather about communicating with authenticity and honesty. Duke is also a trainer for Restorative Practices and has facilitated difficult dialogues including between former fighters and victims or wars.
