Purpose

The Head of the Communication department is the focal point for matters related to communication and outreach of the Legal Agenda. S/he is responsible for setting and implementing priorities, objectives, and strategies related to Legal Agenda’s communication and advocacy activities. S/he contributes to building and reinforcing synergies with Legal Agenda’s Legislation and Policies, Strategic Litigation, Socio-Legal Research, and Journalism departments.  

Responsibilities

  • Sets the strategic orientation of Legal Agenda’s communication department, in cooperation with Executive Management and relevant departments, and designs related guidelines and approaches.
  • Oversees the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of communication and advocacy activities, including public communication, digital communication, content creation and planning, crisis communication, media and social media monitoring, reputation management, interaction with media circles, and resource mobilization.   
  • Contribute to define and map target audiences and provide expert advice on how best to use the appropriate channels to target each audience segment.
  • Contributes to Legal Agenda’s analysis of political, security, judiciary, and socioeconomic developments and identifies issues, trends and opportunities for communication and advocacy work including advice on what products or activities would work best to meet objectives and achieve impact vis-à-vis defined audiences.
  • In close coordination with the Executive Management and heads of departments, contributes to the conceptualization and leads on the implementation of dynamic and interactive campaigns to raise awareness on issues of major strategic concern to the Legal Agenda.
  • Develop approaches for direct and indirect influencing of decision makers, stakeholders, and relevant audiences to support and implement actions related to law, justice, as well as political, civil, and socioeconomic rights in Arabic-speaking countries. 
  • Initiate and grow professional relationships with key stakeholders including the civil society, and in the legal, academia, media, and arts and culture industries.
  • Organize outreach events including public information events, grassroots events, news conferences, media briefings, etc.
  • Supervise the management of Legal Agenda’s digital platforms keeping them up-to-date with technology and digital developments.   
  • Lead on content creation and supervises the production, and post-production of high quality online and offline communication and advocacy materials.
  • Draft press releases, messages, statements, explainers, scripts etc.
  • Oversee the coaching, capacity-building, and workflows for the team under his/her supervision.
  • Support communication-related training and coaching for non-communication staff members of the Legal Agenda.

Skills and experience

  • Solid knowledge of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential to designing and implementing impactful and innovative campaign strategies.
  • Ability to process and analyze complex information and repurpose it for non-specialist audiences.
  • Ability to identify public affairs issues and advise on communication opportunities and risks.
  • Ability to cultivate strategic and impactful partnerships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop approaches and tools that serve organizational objectives; identify priority campaigns and corresponding priorities, and adjusting priorities as required.
  • Experience managing social networks, drafting of social media content and strategies, and developing KPIs to measure and recalibrate approaches. 
  • Problem-solving skills, continuously looking for creative ways to solve problems and proactively seek to improve approaches and tools.
  • Experience of coordinating the work of different teams, setting up processes and priorities and delivering communication solutions.   
  • Support and inspire team under supervision to perform their best and grow in their roles.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, marketing, or related field is required and/or a first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience

Work Experience

A minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience in communication, journalism, advertising, marketing, public relations, or related area.

Languages

Fluency in oral and written Arabic and English is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates includes an assessment exercise. Successful candidates will be invited to an interview.
