How to apply?

Candidates interested in applying to the internship program should

  1. Fill in the application on Microsoft Forms;
    • fill each question on the internship form;
    • state the reason(s) they are applying to the internship program,
    • state the skills and experience they expect to gain or develop during the period of internship;
    • state the contribution they will make to the work of ARE program
    • state how they align with Chemonics values and principles
    • provide the contact details of their university advisor/teacher, indicate their education level and work experience (if available);
  2. Submit their resume to the recruitment mailbox [email protected] . Title of the email should be “”Internship - Agriculture and Agro- Food””. Emails that do not follow this title will not be considered.

Any candidate who does not fill the application template as indicated above will not selected be by the internship selection panel that will shortlist and select suitable interns. The selected interns will sign an internship agreement.

Application deadline is August 7, 2021. Chemonics will shortlist and interview on a rolling basis and might select interns before the deadline date.

Project Background

The Lebanon Agriculture and Rural Empowerment (ARE) program is a multi-year project funded by USAID to develop rural economies in Lebanon through support to the agro-food sector and other industries.  The approach that ARE adopts is different compared to other activities/programs. It is an interactive one, whereby MSMEs (champion firms) are invited to submit concept notes highlighting constraints, that they and their partners are facing, so that USAID co-partners with them to develop potential interventions.  The activity aims to unlock local and export sales potential while also creating jobs and increasing farmers’ and worker’s incomes. ARE will link value chain actors to domestic and international markets; and improve farm productivity through improved practices, technology, increased volume, and/or decreased cost. 

Summary of Internship

Through its network with local universities, champion firms and other related private sector stakeholders, the ARE internship program aims to provide young agriculture science students and fresh agriculture engineer graduates the opportunity to gain a better understanding of Chemonics and USAID mandates and programs and to supplement their academic knowledge with a practical work experience in the agricultural sector in Lebanon.

Responsibilities and tasks

Administrative

  • Arrange programmatic and technical meetings/site visits as requested
  • Maintain calendars and appointments
  • Assist in taking notes and minutes of meetings when and as needed
  • Arrange program logistics including but not limited to travel requests, room booking, event booking.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned

Technical and Operational

  • Shadow and support the Business Portfolio Managers on the design and implementation of ARE's interventions.
  • Support and assist with reviewing and/or editing and/or summarizing reports, studies, and other documentation.
  • Conduct field visits with the ARE team members to SMEs and other stakeholders
  • Take notes and memos during site visits; type documents, drafts, and reports; sort and manage files.
  • Manage and update MS database and input information including document control and deliverable tracking.
  • Undertake research on specific/assigned agricultural, agribusiness and tourism topics and review studies and other relevant documentation.
  • Other programmatic and technical duties as assigned by the Business Development Officer (BDO)

Communications

  • Support in planning and organizing ARE networking events and site visits
  • Support in gathering documentation needed for the monitoring, evaluation and learning as well as Grants teams (fill surveys, collect data, etc.)
  • Facilitate effective internal communications with other departments
  • Prepare presentation and reports
  • Other communication related tasks as assigned by the Business Development Officer (BDO)

 

Place of Assignment

The intern can work remotely, however is welcome to work from ARE’s program office space in Beirut and will be expected to travel to areas of operation throughout the country as needed and in line with Chemonics’ COVID-19 prevention guidelines. ARE requires interns from various regions in Lebanon sepcifically from Bekaa, South Lebanon, and North Lebanon. 

 

Reporting

The intern will report directly to the ARE Business Development Officer or Deputy Chief of Party/Chief Technical Officer.

 

Eligibility criteria

Under this Internship Program, applicants will be considered based on the criteria below.

All Interns must:

  • Nationality: Lebanese
  • Age: candidates should be between the ages of 18 and 25 years of age
  • Education: 

Student enrolled in BS agriculture sciences or a related field (2nd and 3rd year)

Have completed one year of full-time study;

Student enrolled in Master’s agriculture sciences or a related field

University graduate agriculture engineer or related field (up to 3 years)

  • Language: Arabic (native language), English is a must, French is a plus
  • Skills: candidates should be able to adapt to an international multicultural environment, have good communication and writing skills, ability to work independently and under pressure, open to learning, environment team player with demonstrable self-initiative and drive
  • Computer literacy: Microsoft Windows, proficient use of processing tools such as Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Apply to an internship in the field in which they are enrolled
