Veterinarians in Mount Lebanon, North and Bekaa

Scope of work

Under the Action, IRL will conduct an outreach using social media platforms and traditional outreach campaigns to identify 45 to 55 households who are aware of livestock farming. This sector has been targeted due to an in depth market assessment conducted early 2020 after the evolution of the Economic crisis which resulted in a scarcity of milk.

Livestock farmers who are in need of financial aid will be supported to reach a situation that is more viable and sustainable through the provision of one cow each thus, creating a source of income for them and also increasing the supply of milk. Veterinarian could aim to focus on livestock farming skills, improve the know-how regarding milking, feeding and delivering of cows.

Targeted Group

The project targets 45 to 55 households that are willing to register, have at least little experience in livestock farming and a suitable place to take care of the cow. The business idea should be competitive having the capacity to generate decent jobs with relevance to the market needs. To assess this, IRL collects information through contacting municipalities, veterinarians and agricultural engineers who provide us with lists of potential beneficiaries whom are then visited by IRL employees in order to fill out applications and assess the needs and viability according to the required criteria.

Implementation methodology
IRL is seeking 3 veterinarians to support the intervention by providing coaching, mentorship and response to livestock farming needs for households contributing to their knowledge in cow feeding, milking and vaccination. The assessment will be supported through a demand-driven and needs-based approach to identify specific barriers and address them. IRL will draw a diagnostic of all selected farmers through a grading process applied during the training sessions provided by the veterinarian. To assess main issues and point out required expert advice, the veterinarian will be asked to collaborate on the selection of areas of focus in terms of training topics and outlines. IRL will closely follow up with the veterinarian, evaluate, and keep track of participants’ performance. Around 90 potential beneficiaries will be selected to attend the training and they will be then shortlisted to around 50 who will receive livestock according to their performance during training.

Objectives of the veterinarian (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES):

  • Beneficiaries will be divided into 4 teams. Each team should be provided with 3 tutorial sessions of 2 hours per session.
  • Providing livestock-related advices, guidance and counselling to the selected beneficiaries.
  • Providing cows with vaccines. The vaccination process should start upon delivery of cows to their destination. Follow-up on the vaccination process by delivering the rest of vaccines following a timeline provided by the veterinarian.
  • Islamic Relief will purchase the vaccines from the prospective veterinarian. So the veterinarian shall mention the amounts, names and cost of vaccines for each cow in the financial proposal.
  • Note that all vaccines will be purchased and supplied by IRL in coordination with the veterinarian who will advise the quantity and type.
  • Note that feed will be purchased and supplied by IRL in coordination with the veterinarian who will advise the quantity and type.
  • Explain a detailed feeding and milking plan for beneficiaries.
  • Provide information on how to take care of the calf since the cow will be pregnant and will deliver the calf at the beneficiary’s place.
  • Note that cows will be around 6 months pregnant with first calf.
  • List and quantity of items/services to be procured and estimated prices in case needed.
  • List of short-term actions to be taken in addition to procurement, if applied.
  • Confirmation of attendance to the session.
  • Assessment meetings with selected beneficiaries.
  • Develop a clear outline and training agenda based on the needs and capacity assessment conducted with the selected farmers.
  • Provision for IRL for the full training Curriculum before the start of delivering the programme.
  • Delivery of coaching sessions.
  • Final evaluation report detailing the progress of beneficiaries and outlining steps for future improvement.
