INTERSOS is a non-profit humanitarian aid organisation that works to bring assistance to people in danger, victims of natural disasters and armed conflicts. Established in 1992 with support from the Italian Federation of Trade Unions, its actions are based on the values of solidarity, justice, human dignity, equal rights and opportunities for all people and respect for diversity and coexistence, paying particular attention to the most vulnerable and the unprotected.

INTERSOS identifies with the core values of CONCORD, the European Confederation of NGOs; it adheres to international codes of conduct for humanitarian organisations and the values and principles expressed within those codes. INTERSOS is recognised by the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the European Commission and the principal UN agencies; it is privileged to hold an advisory status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
INTERSOS is an independent association which, through its own humanitarian operators, intervenes to effectively answer the needs of people in serious crises situations, mainly in the world's poorest regions, who are suffering, deprived of rights, dignity and essentials goods. It maintains a flexible operating structure. The head office in Italy coordinates, supports and monitors the planned activities in the countries of intervention carried out by decentralised offices.

 

 

Job Purpose:

 

This position has been created as a response to the emergency situation in Beirut areas that were affected by the latest explosion.

 

The Hygiene Promoter is part of INTERSOS Wash Team, working on project activities which includes: planning, implementing and monitoring of hygiene promotion activities and distribution of Hygiene items and contributing to the Covid-19 response. The Hygiene Promoter works in close collaboration with the team members of the Programme, in coordination and under the supervision of the Mobile Unit Team Leader and technical supervision of the WASH Manager. He/she contributes to and is part of receiving referrals and conducting surveys and assessments, collecting and processing of information, implementing distribution activities and reporting on achievements. He/she spends most of his/her time in the field and is in regular and direct contact with beneficiaries and local authorities of the targeted communities.

Generic Duties:

  1. Plan, implement, monitor and supervise all the hygiene promotion (HP) and distribution activities communication of project activities running in the field.
  2. Perform accurate data collection and needs assessments and report back to his/her supervisor
  3. Collect, analyse and interpret all technical data concerning the HP/ distribution activities in the field, and preparing weekly logbooks as required by supervisor
  4. Contribute in liaising and coordinating all the HP and distribution activities with the other INGO partner of the project, community representatives, beneficiaries and other local and international agencies representatives engaged in the HP WASH sector across the project sites.
  5. Prepare and file relevant documents according to procedures.
  6. Contribute in identifying problems and report on WASH needs and concerns in the target areas.
  7. Submit work plans and reports over the implemented activities on weekly and monthly base.
  8. Participate in workshops and trainings in the WASH sector in order to broaden working knowledge and potentially transfer acquired information onto colleagues and beneficiaries.
  9. Suggest new methods and approaches in order to improve the quality of activities.
  10. Perform other related duties upon request to support the project team and the project implementation process.

Specific Duties:

  1. Organize and conduct surveys, questionnaires or assessments as required.
  2. Implement and monitor all the hygiene promotion and hygiene kits distribution activities.
  3. Participate in elaborating the project’s hygiene promotion and distribution activities
  4. Prepare, on weekly basis, a detailed HP work-plan to submit to supervisor for its final approval.
  5. Organize and supervise all the awareness sessions and distribution activities during the duration of the project.
  6. Organize and supervise all the item distributions that might occur during the implementation of hygiene promotion sessions/events and communication campaigns.
  7. Produce weekly/daily progress reports on the HP and capacity building field activities, contract status and beneficiary participation as required.
  8. Liaise with local authorities and community representative to ensure the proper implementation of the HP programme and the participation of all the concerned people.
  9. Contribute to the development of monitoring tools to measure the impact of the hygiene promotion/capacity building activities implemented in coordination with the HP Officer and the MEAL and Communication Assistant, this may include focus group discussions and key informant interviews.
  10. Ensure that activity documents such as sessions’ attendance sheets, minutes of meetings, etc. are properly filed and kept secure.
  11. Identification and referrals of needs and potential new beneficiaries to the supervisor
  12. Participate actively and constructively in team meetings.
  13. Respond to donor requests for special cases that need individual attention and follow their progress.
  14. Fulfilling other duties of similar level if needed across other INTERSOS projects in the area.

Competencies: (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

Professional Competencies:

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience, of which mminimum 1 year of demonstrable experience in WASH programs, for international or local development organisations.
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of Hygiene Promotion in urban context.
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge Community Based Approach in Wash Operations, especially related to HP activities
  • Familiar with the minimum WASH standards (e.g., Sphere, WASH Sector Standards in Lebanon)
  • MS proficiency (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Strong Reporting skills
  • Experience in conducting surveys, managing data and statistics is desirable
  • Knowledge of the NGO operations and the dynamics of the humanitarian sector is a plus
  • Driving license.
