Training on psycho-social support and positive coping mechanism for care providers and psychologists

In Lebanon, HelpAge work started in 2013 through the inclusion of older people in humanitarian response. The programme was then expanded in 2014 to ensure more inclusive primary health care services were available to older Syrian refugees as well as to vulnerable older members of the host communities. In 2015, a PSS component was added to the health programme to ensure protection concerns of vulnerable older men and women affected by the Syria crisis were addressed.

Starting 2016, HelpAge is implementing a project in Lebanon in partnership with Amel International, Makassed Foundation, Imam Sadr Foundation and Young Mens’ Christian Association, Lebanon. The project phase 2 extends over a period of 1 year (continuation of the previous BMZ project for 3 years) and is funded by the German Government. The project main objective is to alleviate the suffering of chronically ill Syrian refugees and host community members as well as to reduce morbidity rates of type II diabetes and hypertension. Project activities revolve around detection and management of hypertension and diabetes, outreach activities, psycho-social support for older Syrian refugees and host community and capacity building of organizations and community volunteer involved in the delivery of services to the target population.

As part of the capacity-building component, psychologists practising at the health centres will be providing one-on-one consultations and leading peer-to-peer support groups and PSS activities for older people.
