Summary: The Accountant internship will be responsible for performing accounting entries and following procedures such as cash management, keeping financial records of project-related expenses, making payments on time and ensuring the best use of available project funds. S/he will work on identifying, recording, classifying, reporting, filing, scanning, interpreting and verifying financial paperwork. The Accountant will report directly to Director of Finance and Administration (DFA).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Preferred QuickBooks system user
Basic Accounting and/or finance basics
Organize hard copy payment vouchers, petty cash vouchers and receipts
Record expenses in the excel sheet on a daily basis, and to properly fill in the information needed
To do and follow up the pay-outs and advances
Monitor payments due dates
To manage the safe and the petty cash, and report any discrepancies to superior
To help in the calculation and payment of NSSF (social security) and income taxes via Ministry of Finance (monthly and yearly) as well as all other annual declarations to Ministry of Finance
To prepare the pay roll at the end of each month
Ensuring efficient maintenance of financial records
Preparing financial reports within required deadlines and by budget lines
Resolving any accounting irregularities with the support of the DFA
Managing and supporting of the budget of the project
Liaise with the DFA on financial reporting issues with the subrecipients in order to support them;
Record/Scan/File receipts and support data entry of expenditures as needed;
Report immediately any litigious / suspicious voucher / receipt / document to the DFA
Preparing and coordinating the auditing process
To help preparing local staff contracts (new recruitements, contract extensions or renewals)
To keep track of the days off for the national staff and to make sure the process is respected
Assist in procurement efforts for the office.
Assist all other program departments in monitoring and reviewing their activities.
Report to the DFA and support other tasks, as required.

Education and/or Experience: A bachelor’s degree (completed or in progress) in finance or accounting is required. Experience working with international donors strongly preferred. Ability to work collaboratively within a team and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Language Skills: Must have written and spoken fluency in English and Arabic or French.
Communication Skills: Listens and gets clarification, responds well to questions and feedback, participates in meetings, effectively communicate utilizing a variety of technologies such as phone or video phone (i.e. Skype), writes clearly and informatively, and edits work for spelling and grammar. A lot of patience is required to listen to various confessions.
Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
