Gathering to demand and defend your right to Know

ACT for the Disappeared, the Committee of the parents of the disappeared and kidnapped in Lebanon and SOLIDE call on all citizens to gather on November 17, at 1:30pm at Mathaf, to demand and defend our right to know the fate of the missing and disappeared.

Why to gather on November 17?
17 November 1982. Following the radio call of Wadad Halwani, whose husband had just been kidnapped, the families and friends of the disappeared persons gathered for the first time to demand the release of their relatives.
17 November 2012, 30 years later thousands of people are still missing. On that day, the organizers invite the children and grand children of the missing and forced disappeared persons and the entire Lebanese society to call on Lebanese authorities to take responsibility in guaranteeing our right to know their fate and to provide guarantees that abductions will not occur again.

Description of the gathering
ACT for the Disappeared, the Committee of the parents of the disappeared and kidnapped in Lebanon and SOLIDE call the citizens to take part in a bus tour that aims to denounce the inaction of the Lebanese authorities.
The meeting point is at Mathaf at 1:30pm. From then on, the attendees will be invited to go on a bus tour that will stop at three locations where mass graves were officially recognized to be located.
In 2000, the Lebanese authorities acknowledged in an official report the existence of many mass graves across the Lebanese territory, and named three of them. The Lebanese State never provided any information about the "inquiry" that led to these conclusions, and, 12 years later, it has not taken any steps to protect these sites or exhume the remains buried there.
The bus tour will end at 4:30pm at the tent of the families of the Lebanese detainees in Syria, in front of the UN House, in downtown, to share an afternoon snack with the relatives of the disappeared and detainees.
In 2005, the families of the forcibly disappeared in Syria started a sit-in downtown Beirut demanding that serious measures be taken by the authorities. Seven years later, the families are still there, waiting for the Lebanese State to take action.

On October 29, 2012, ACT for the Disappeared has launched a nation-wide campaign entitled “Enough waiting. We want to know,” which seeks to encourage a public discussion and an informed debate about the issue of the missing and forcibly disappeared in Lebanon and possible ways to address it.
This gathering is the culmination of this campaign.
